What is ChatGPT, the AI chatbot that everyone is talking about?

No doubt you’ve at least heard of ChatGPT by this point, right? Well, just in case you haven’t, we at Narrativa have tested it and are ready to get you up-to-speed. Our opinion, you ask? We are amazed, and you probably will be too! However, there are some surprising drawbacks as well, so let’s dive in. What is ChatGPT, the AI ​​chatbot that everyone is talking about?

ChatGPT, an OpenAI initiative

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot trained to provide information and answer user questions thanks to its conversational interface. We can maintain a very complete dialogue with it as you will see in the examples that we’ll show you later.

Just who is behind ChatGPT? None other than Elon Musk himself, (who is currently all over the news). Musk is one of the founders of OpenAI, an artificial intelligence company that has impressed the world with creations like DALL·E and Whisper.

Multiple uses in multiple languages

Why is everyone talking about ChatGPT and impressed with its results? Because it is very intuitive. We give the model a challenge and ChatGPT is able to do all of this:

• Writing the script for a movie, a series, a YouTube video;
• Explain a concept to us as if we were small children;
• Write a poem;
• Perform programming tasks;
• Give a recommendation;
• And of course, calculations.

ChatGPT does it all very well in several languages and it gives us the answers we need in milliseconds. This leads us to ask:

Is Google search engine dead?

Not yet, though ChatGPT has the added value of providing a direct answer. When we run a search on Google, we are given several results in the form of articles that contain possible relevant topics which we must sift through to find our answer. But ChatGPT is more immediate. It doesn’t give us possibilities: it gives us the answer itself.

This, which can be incredible, also has its disadvantages.

What are the disadvantages?

If we all use the same source of information, without alternatives, everyone will end up with only one point of view. This is undoubtedly dangerous. As ChatGPT grows, maybe this will be eventually addressed, but for now a singular answer could pose a problem.

In addition, ChatGPT has already received accusations of racism and sexism, which is not surprising considering that the system has been trained with content taken from the Internet globally.

At the moment, the model is free during the research preview, although we do not know for how long. Every time ChatGPT gives an an answer, you have the ability to also provide feedback. The users themselves can retrain it or suggest improvements.

How have you trained?

For those of you who are curious about the technical process, here is a short summary of how ChatGPT has been trained.

ChatGPT is based on GPT3.5, the latest version of GPT3. There are three training phases:

1. A fine-tuning process on conversational datasets is conducted so that the model understands what a conversation is.
2. Once the model has picked up the style, a series of users ask questions and ChatGPT gives various answers. These users are performing an improvement ranking by response. Because there is simply so much data, the process is repeated over and over. 
3. Finally, a reward model was created thanks to the step above and it fine-tunes the main model via PPO.

It’s a case of reinforcement learning that incorporates human feedback in the loop. It sounds very complicated, but basically it’s a branch of Machine Learning by which we train the model to react to a situation under the instructions of a human.
